One of my favorite things is colored glass. Besides loving color (as I have said previously), colored glass allows the light to pass through and depending upon what you use it for, it is can truly make a statement. I came across this vendor at a gift show, Hudson Beach Glass (www.hudsonbeachglass.com), and every piece I have ever ordered from them is more magnificent than the last one. I use them to serve food with, to decorate a shelf or even on a wall as an accent piece. I encourage you to check them out, it is worth the visit to the site!

I love color! Whether it be in design or in fashion or accesories, I love color. I prefer to temper the color for the environment or the aesthetic or for the moment (in fashion). I find that selecting the right color choice just “sets something off.” It is a tricky thing to play with color. I find that friends of mine are more comfortable in the white, tan, black, brown range because it is safer. Many chose to design their own homes in that way. But for me, adding something to a space that “pops” a color does so much for how the space feels when it is complete. It just looks right as it comes together and it enhances the look and feel so much. So, play with color, and see what feels right!

One of the first things I found out about myself after I became an Interior Designer was I love to look at the details. I find myself walking in to a hotel room while I am travelling or working, and my mind notices (and takes little snapshots) of the details. Usually, they are the little details, for example, I prefer if the lamp shades aren’t the same on lamps in the same space. I like to think that a good designer has thought about an “experience” for a guest versus buying things that look like they came out of a showroom and were placed exactly as they were sold. What does the owner need a designer for if they can replicate exactly what they have seen? A talented designer focuses on all the little things that add up to the “big” thing. They think three dimensionally how it will look together and how it will make the right statement. That’s the fun part about designing, and I want to look through every space I enter and try to notice all the things the designer thought about as the space came together. I also want to remember the little things that worked well so one day I can come up with my own idea on how to enhance something I am designing.

It seems to me that everyone today has to become a writer. Whether it is blogging, facebook, twitter, web pages, e-mail, etc. a good part of what we do is write our thoughts, ideas, feelings, and opinions. I have maintained a static web page for many years and I never felt the need to maintain a blog. However, the world is changing and maybe the experience, opinions and thoughts I have related to the hotel and contract design world is relevant. My inbox is filled with experts blogging, and I guess that is reason enough to undertake this task. So, here we go……..

I hope to provide you with some words about the things I do every day…..reading the trade publications, designing new spaces, creating innovative ideas, selecting products, meeting with sales reps on the new releases from their lines, visiting trade shows, and most importantly paying attention to the world around me. I invite you to come back regularly and read my blog posts and hopefully use it to stimulate your own thoughts, creativity and ideas!
